In the ‘Mediterranean’ operation carried out by the Kyrenia Judicial Branch and the Crime Prevention Branch, 54 Syrians who entered the country illegally were identified.

While Syrians were detained for expulsion, 2 captains who allegedly brought them to the country and 10 suspects who helped them were brought before the court yesterday.

Ömer Faruk Şengil, a police sergeant at the Kyrenia Forensic Branch, on Friday, 19 August at 03.30, from an unapproved port in the north of Akdeniz village, with two zodiac-type proboscis boats, he said that 54 Syrian persons, 39 of whom are adult males, 4 adult women, and 11 children aged 3 to 13 entered the TRNC without permission.

Şengil stated that 32 refugees were detected and arrested in the forest area at the aforementioned location at around 12:30 on the same date, and that 22 of them were detected and arrested in the same vicinity on August 20, 2022.

Şengil stated that it was determined that the Van vehicle, which was abandoned at the location where the subject boats were located belonged to İsmail Dağcı.

The police announced that Onur Güren took the captain and his assistants, who were on the boats, from the scene and left.

The police stated that Hazar Söyler voluntarily gave a statement and confessed to his crime, stating that they were identified in the market that Cemal Bozalan did not operate and that they were taken to the Çamlıbel police station.

Explaining that while Cemal Bozalan was at the scene, Onur Güren had called him and had given him information. The police said that Güren, together with Edip Yeşilyurt, the boat captain and his assistants, had settled in their residence at the address in Nicosia which belonged to Oktay Dağcıl, the father of İsmail Dağcıl.

Stating that Onur Güren and Edip Yeşilyurt were detected in the vehicle with license plate SY 057, the police noted that Güren’s subordinate search found a Toyota brand saloon car and a house key.

Şengil stated that Kaan Kızılaya and Enver Uslu were found hiding in the living room, while Yakup and Vedat Ardes were hiding in the kitchen.

The police stated that Ahmet Danact, a resident of Famagusta, was also arrested and noted that they had taken statements from 5 people about the issue, that the cameras and cell phones of the suspects would be examined, and that there were 2 wanted persons.

Şengil stated that the issue is a serious crime, which falls within the scope of the High Criminal Court and envisages imprisonment of up to 10 years, and asked for additional time.

Announcing its decision, the court emphasized that there is an ongoing investigation and ordered the suspects to be detained for another 4 days.
