Israel to Reopen Allenby Crossing With Jordan for Aid and Goods

by Joseph Anthony

Israel will reopen the Allenby Crossing with Jordan on Wednesday to allow the passage of goods and humanitarian aid, an Israeli security official confirmed.

The crossing has been closed to aid shipments since September, when a driver transporting humanitarian supplies to Gaza opened fire, killing two Israeli soldiers before being shot dead by security forces.

Officials said new measures will be in place, including tighter screening of Jordanian drivers and truck cargo, and the deployment of a dedicated security force at the crossing.

The Allenby Bridge is a vital trade route between Jordan and Israel and serves as the only gateway for more than 3 million Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank to access Jordan and beyond.

While passenger traffic resumed shortly after the September attack, aid trucks have remained barred until now. The United Nations has described the crossing as a major lifeline for delivering food, tents, and other essential goods into Gaza.
