Former Governor of Anambra State and prominent political figure Peter Obi reaffirmed his commitment to educational development during visits to two notable institutions in the state: Divine Rays British School, Obosi, and Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha.
Obiโs first stop was at Divine Rays British School, where over 1,500 pupils gathered to celebrate the investiture of new students. Addressing the crowd, Obi emphasized discipline, focus, and academic excellence as pillars of personal and national progress.
The school holds personal significance for him, as its principal, Mrs. Ezeibeanu Stephanie Ozioma, was a recipient of the โฆ1 million First-Class Graduate Award during Obiโs tenure as governor. He praised her leadership and the schoolโs consistent record of outstanding WAEC results, calling it โa testament to what happens when we invest in education and empower our young people.โ
Later in the day, Obi presided over the Centenary Keynote Event at DMGS, Onitsha, marking 100 years of the institutionโs legacy. The event drew distinguished alumni and dignitaries, including the Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria, The Most Rev. Henry C. Ndukuba. DMGS has produced some of Nigeriaโs most influential figures, including Prof. Kenneth Dike, Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Prof. Herbert Kodilinye, and the father of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, among others.
Reflecting on the schoolโs history, Obi recalled its decline following government takeover in 1970 and his controversial decision as governor to return DMGS and other mission-founded schools to their original owners. โIt reminds us that education remains the foundation upon which every great society is built,โ he stated.
Obi concluded his visits with a call to action: โNo nation can rise above the quality of its education. It is through the classroom that we shape minds, build character, and nurture citizens who will one day lead our country with integrity and vision.โ He urged leaders at all levels to prioritize education and ensure that no child is left behind.
