Steph Curry continued his remarkable scoring run on Friday, matching Michael Jordan’s record for the most 40-point games in the NBA after the age of 30.
The Golden State Warriors star poured in 49 points in a nail-biting 109-108 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, just two days after dropping 46 in a win over the Texans. Curry’s performance equalled Jordan’s mark of 44 games with 40 points or more since turning 30, while he joined Jordan and LeBron James as the only players aged 37 or older to record back-to-back 40-point outings.
Golden State swept the two-game mini-series in San Antonio and secured its third win in four contests.
The Spurs led by 10 early in the fourth quarter before Curry, Gary Payton II and Brandin Podziemski sparked a rally to edge the Warriors ahead 101-100 with 3:37 left. Rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama responded with a soaring tip-in to restore San Antonio’s lead at 108-105 with just over a minute remaining.
Jimmy Butler III cut the deficit to one, and after Wembanyama’s emphatic block and a missed shot by De’Aaron Fox, Curry drove the lane and was fouled with 6.4 seconds to play. He calmly sank both free throws to put Golden State ahead.
San Antonio turned again to Fox, whose contested jumper at the buzzer bounced twice on the rim before falling away, sealing Curry’s latest milestone night.
