Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has formally announced his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a strategic move to secure the future of the state’s development agenda.
Speaking during a public address titled “Charting a New Course,” Mbah described the transition as a moment of reflection, renewal, and political realignment. He expressed gratitude to the people of Enugu—Ndi Enugu—for their unwavering support over the past 28 months, crediting their trust as the foundation for the state’s transformation.
“At a time when confidence in political leaders had almost collapsed, you chose to believe in us,” Mbah said. “Without that trust, the transformation we see today would never have happened.”
Highlighting achievements under his administration, Mbah pointed to the near-completion of Smart Green Schools, the establishment of primary healthcare centres in all 260 wards, a reported 80% drop in crime, and significant reductions in maternal and infant mortality rates. He also cited the launch of AI-powered security infrastructure, the restoration of water supply, and over 1,000 kilometres of newly paved roads.

Other milestones include a 600% increase in internally generated revenue, the revitalization of key assets such as Hotel Presidential and Nigergas, and the emergence of Enugu as a tourism and investment hub—with direct flights, eco-tourist sites, and a fully booked International Conference Centre.
Mbah acknowledged the PDP’s role in his political journey, thanking the party for providing the platform that led to his electoral victory. “For nearly three decades, the PDP and the people of Enugu walked side by side,” he said. “Together, we built relationships that will always matter to me personally and to this state.”
However, he emphasized that leadership sometimes requires difficult decisions. “There always comes a time when everyone must make a bold choice to determine their destiny,” Mbah stated. “Today, after long reflection, we have made the decision to leave the PDP and join the All Progressives Congress.”
The announcement marks a significant shift in Enugu’s political landscape, with implications for both state and national dynamics. Mbah’s defection is expected to spark debate among stakeholders and reshape alliances ahead of future elections.
