The Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, Lagos, has ruled that the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, was not a homicide but resulted from medical negligence by an unlicensed auxiliary nurse.
Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, delivering her findings on Friday, stated that nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe acted unlawfully and negligently by administering an injection without a doctor’s prescription. The court recommended her prosecution by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions for unlawful medical practice and gross negligence under Section 29 of the Coroner’s Law.
While dismissing theories of foul play, the coroner criticized Mohbad’s father for permitting a hasty burial without an autopsy and faulted the late singer’s wife for treating him at home instead of seeking immediate hospital care. The court also noted that Mohbad’s prior assault petition against Naira Marley and Sam Larry should be properly investigated based on new evidence.
Additionally, the magistrate condemned social media influencers for spreading misinformation that prejudiced the inquest, urging improved healthcare standards and law enforcement responsiveness.
The findings bring partial closure to the controversial case while highlighting systemic failures in Nigeria’s medical and justice systems.
