In a significant development in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria’s North West region, the Nigerian Military announced on Wednesday that troops from Operation Fansan Yamma successfully neutralized Aminu Kanawa, the second-in-command to the notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji, during operations conducted between January 20th and 21st, 2025.
According to a statement released by Defence Director Edward Buba, the military operations also resulted in severe injuries to several close allies of Turji, including his younger brother Dosso and a key associate named Danbokolo. The troops further eliminated numerous key commanders affiliated with Turji, such as Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, Kabiru Gebe, Bello Buba, and Dan Inna Kahon-Saniya-Yafi-Bahaushe.
The statement detailed that over 24 terrorists attempting to flee from Turji’s camps in the Gebe and Isa Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Sokoto State, and around Gidan Rijiya in Shinkafi LGA of Zamfara State were also neutralized during the offensive.
Additionally, another significant terrorist figure, Suleiman, a loyalist of the late terrorist leader Halilu Sububu, was killed while leading a rescue effort for Turji’s camp at Fakai high ground. This action further destabilized Turji’s operations.
The military’s actions have dealt a substantial blow to the terrorist infrastructure in the North West, crippling their command structure and combat effectiveness. These terrorists were known for orchestrating numerous kidnappings and attacks in areas like Zurmi, Shinkafi, Isa, and Sabon Birni LGAs in Zamfara and Sokoto States.
Director Buba emphasized the military’s commitment to continue these operations until the terrorist threat is completely eradicated, aiming to ensure safety and security for all citizens in the affected regions.
