Tragic news unfolded in the northern Philippines when a devastating collision between a pick-up truck and a passenger bus claimed the lives of eleven members of a family returning from a wake.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight at an intersection in Abulug municipality, Cagayan province.

The Toyota Hilux, carrying a total of 14 passengers, collided with the bus at an intersection with a major highway. According to police reports, only three individuals from the pick-up truck survived the crash. Fortunately, there were no fatalities among the passengers of the bus, but both the driver and conductor sustained serious injuries, with 23 others suffering minor injuries.

Police Major Antonio Palattao confirmed the details, emphasizing that the driver of the Toyota Hilux was unfamiliar with the area and failed to anticipate the highway intersection. This lack of awareness likely contributed to the tragic accident, as drivers are typically expected to reduce speed when approaching such intersections.

Road accidents resulting in fatalities are sadly frequent in the Philippines, often attributed to violations of traffic regulations, inadequate vehicle maintenance, and overloaded vehicles. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges and risks faced on Philippine roads, highlighting the need for improved road safety measures and public awareness campaigns to prevent such tragedies in the future.
