The London Metropolitan Police Thursday said it arrested a Nigerian national, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, for reportedly conspiring to bring a child to the UK for organ harvesting.
In a statement on its website, the Met Police wrote that โBeatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.
โIke Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.โ
While the statement did not, however, give further details about the suspects, the age and description given match that of the former Deputy Senate President and his wife Ike Ekweremadu. Neither Ekweremadu nor his aides have issued a comment about the development as of the time of publishing this report.
But the police added that โboth been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistratesโ Court later today.
โThe investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.
โA child has been safeguarded and we are working closely with partners on continued support. As criminal proceedings are now underway we will not be providing further details.โ
