Algerian football legend Rabah Madjer has been appointed as an ambassador for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 63-year-old, who is most renowned for scoring in the final of and winning the European Cup (UEFA Champions League) with Porto in 1987, as well as claiming Africa Cup of Nations glory with Algeria in 1990, is an icon of Arab culture.
โ€œI am very happy to be named ambassador for this 2022 World Cup,โ€ Madjer said on social media, as quoted by DZFoot.
โ€œI hope to be up to this mission that awaits us. This is a highly anticipated World Cup for the first time in an Arab country.
โ€œI hope it will be a great success. I wish good luck to all the teams that are going to participate.โ€
Madjer, who accumulated over 80 caps for the Desert Foxes, played at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups in Spain and Mexico respectively.
His home nation of Algeria will not be present at Qatar 2022 after narrowly missing out on qualification to Cameroon in the playoff round at the end of March.
