World number three Alexander Zverev blamed the ATP Tourโs scheduling for his underwhelming performance in Sundayโs Madrid Open final where Carlos Alcaraz stormed to a 6-3 6-1 victory in just 62 minutes.
Alcaraz had knocked out Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the previous two rounds in matches that totalled six hours but did not face a single break point in the final as he made short work of the German who struggled on serve.
โThe scheduling needs to be done betterโฆ Yesterday I started my match at 11:00 p.m. I played three sets. Finished at 1:30,โ Zverev told reporters.
โUntil I get back to the hotel, until I eat, until I do my work with the physio because I have to prepare my body for the next day, itโs 5:00 a.m.
โIf you stay up until 4:00-5:00 a.m., the next day you are tired. If you do it two nights in a row, you are completely dead. You are destroyed, you will not be able to do physical activity on a maximum level.โ

โYes, most of the people in the stadium wanted Carlos to win and all of that, but nobody wanted to see a match like this,โ Zverev added.
โEverybody wanted to see a great fight. Everybody wanted to see some high-level tennis. But Iโm also human, Iโm not a robot. I simply I cannot be on my level when this is happening every single night.
โEverybody says it was a bad match, I made double faults, I didnโt play well and all of that. But look at whatโs happening the days before, look at whatโs actually happening behind the scenes as well. Itโs not quite fair.โ

โThe world is kind of a double standard right now that you have to prove yourself innocent. Until you prove yourself innocent you are guilty, basically, in the world that we live in right now, which is not very fair at times,โ Zverev said.
โBut I hope the whole thing is coming to an end at some point. Then I can also play calmly and be focused with my tennis.โ
