Attacks on judicial officers worrisome, says Anambra CJ

The Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu has decried recent attacks on some judicial officers in the country by the insurgents while performing their legal practices.

Anyachebelu spoke in Onitsha at the opening of a four-day activities marking the 2020 Law Week/Bar Dinner organized by the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Aguata branch (the Frontline Bar).

He regretted the insecurity of lives and property of average Nigerians occasioned by the obvious collapse of institutions in the country thereby rendering the security architecture porous.

He however charged lawyers in the country to carry out their profession without fear or favour by being in the vanguard of defence of rights of average Nigerian citizens and non-citizens.

Chairman of the occasion, Chief Ikenna Egbuna (SAN), urged lawyers to brace up amidst the prevailing circumstances, blaming the ugly development on selfish policies and ideas being pursued by politicians.

The guest lecturer, who is also the Dean of Faculty of Law, Enugu State University of Technology, ESUT, Prof. Osita Ogbu blamed politicians for being instrumental to the degenerating insecurity and extreme poverty in the country.

He also condemned the federal government as well as some state governmentsโ€™ current policy on Amnesty Programmes where persons were caught engaging in terrorism, violence, banditries and other forms of criminalities.

The varsity don expressed worry that such programmes were capable of instigating insecurity in the country.

Chairman of Aguata NBA, Prof. Chima Ubanyionwu, Chairman of the 2020 Law Week/Dinner committee, Chief Sylvester Oluoba, as well as immediate past Chairman of the branch, Clifford Okoye, lent their voices on the spate of insecurity in the country.
