Baby rescued as fire guts apartment in Anambra

A little child narrowly escaped being burnt to death in a fire incident in Enugwu Nanka, Orumba North local government area of Anambra State.

The victim was said to have been rescued unhurt by local volunteers who also assisted in putting off the fire which occurred around 3 pm.

A resident of the area blamed the incident on bush burning.

Police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident, saying preliminary investigation revealed that the cause of the fire was as a result of bush burning by unknown persons which escalated and affected part of the building.

He said, โ€œPolice Patrol team attached to Oko Division rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area to prevent hoodlums from taking advantage to loot while the fire was put off through collective efforts of local volunteers which enabled the Police to rescue a child inside the building unhurt.

It was also gathered that two separate fire incidents occurred in Onitsha involving a four-bedroom bungalow and tricycle.

The bungalow belonging to one Hon. Idu Emeka closed to Marine Station Onitsha was reportedly gutted around 3.30am.

The Police spokesperson confirmed both incidents.

He said the value of property destroyed was yet to be ascertained, while investigation was ongoing to determine the cause of the fire incident.

He said, โ€œAt about 3:30am, there was a fire outbreak at four bedroom bungalow belonging to one Hon. Idu Emeka closed to Marine Station Onitsha. Police patrol team led by DPO CPS Onitsha SP Ifeanyi Iburu rushed to the scene and secured the Area.The fire was put off by the fire fighters and other good samaritans.

โ€œAlso, on the 29/1/2020 at about 6:30 pm, a keke napep driven by unknown person, was gutted by fire by Mr Biggs, along new market road opposite Con Oil, Onitsha but the fire was immediately put off before it escalated.โ€

The PPRO said no life was lost in the three incidents, neither was any injury sustained.

He also said that value of property destroyed was yet to be ascertained while cases were being investigated.
