Safeguard your Identity Online: EFCC Charges BUK Students

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu has urged students to be disciplined and shun every form of corruption as they rise through the path of life.

Magu gave this advice while receiving students of the Accounting Department of the Bayero University Kano, on Wednesday, 4th September, 2019 who were on excursion to the EFCC Headquarters Jabi, Abuja.

Magu who was represented by the Director of Organizational Support, EFCC, Dr. Aminu Gusau mni advised the students to be guided by the principles of life and avoid being carried away by emerging trends that could hamper their growth in life.

In his words of admonition, he said โ€œUnfortunately, you have come in the era of drugs, cybercrimes and other vices, please always look at yourself in the mirror and know that your parents have tried everything possible for you to be where you are todayโ€, he further enjoined the students to โ€œfollow the right role models that would enable you live right as we all know what is acceptable in lifeโ€.

Magu who emphasised the importance of preventing corruption said โ€œWe just canโ€™t fight corruption like this, the best way of fighting corruption is to simultaneously work on the curative aspect and preventive aspect. Preventive aspect is the enlightenment we are giving to you nowโ€. He added โ€œThere are two ways, the positive way and the negative way, once you choose the negative way, you end up on the wrong path which has dire consequences, remember, it is between you, your conscience and your Godโ€, he said.

The students were educated on the rudiments of Forensic Analysis as the nucleus of Accounting. In his presentation, DCDS Joseph Ogwiji, Head Financial Studies Department, EFCC Academy Karu, Abuja, said Forensic analysis deals with source documents which are key in determining the authenticity of documents during investigation of financial crimes.

In his presentation, CSP Ibrahim Aliyu Isa, Head, Bank Fraud Unit of the Operations Department spoke on the impact of Advanced Fee Fraud on banks and society. He said that customers lose their hard earned money which further discourages other customers from patronising the banks to keep their money. โ€œThe confidence of customers is usually eroded as members of the public avoids dealing with the banks and it leads to the collapse of banks as its financial strength suffers,โ€ he added. He advised students to be wary of providing their account details online or through SMS without verifying with their financial institutions.

Also speaking, Saโ€™ad Abubakar, Head Cybercrime Unit, while enlightening the students said, โ€œI advise you to be careful with what you do on the internet as whatever you search online will eventually search for youโ€.

He added that โ€œYou must protect yourself online especially from free applications, free internet wifi and Bluetooth as your devices may be hacked and your identity stolen. He advised the students not to be caught at the wrong side of the law instead aid the Commission in the fight against cybercriminals by enlightening your peers and making timely reports.

Samin Amaddin, Head Enlightenment and Re-orientation Unit, while thanking the students, said โ€œI encourage you to join the Zero Tolerance Clubs in your school so you can build capacity and join in the fight against corruptionโ€.

In his vote of thanks, Abdulkadir Isah Mohammed, President of Accounting Students commended the EFCC for hosting his department to an enlightening forum while also promising to spread the knowledge gathered on the visit.
