Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has urged officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), to always focus on the reformation of inmates.
Aregbesola gave the advice in Abuja when he visited the headquarters of the NCS.
He said all hands should be on deck to ensure that inmates are better citizens when they leave the walls of the correctional facilities.
Aregbesola reinstated the sanctity of governance as the guarantee of security and safety of the entire Nigerian people.
He expressed his readiness to contribute his own ideas to improve the internal security of the country with collaboration and cooperation of the security agencies in intelligence gathering.
The minister promised to set up a synergy between the agencies in his Ministry, the Police and other security agencies in the country in intelligence sharing, so as to improve on the security situation in the country.
His words: โwe have seen a new approach in all the agencies that are to support the ministry in executing it primary mandate which is internal security and safety of Nigerians. I am impressed. I am impressed with the level of commitment in terms of investment of the government in all the agencies.
โI am prepared for the task ahead this is just a motivation. I am prepared for the work of the Ministry of Interior. What I must tell Nigerians is that leadership is for all. We must never assume that leadership is for those at the apex level of it. Everybody has a role to play particularly in security.
โWe must take internal security very seriously. Changing this name from a custodian service to a correctional service is a great move for this administration. Our focus on this service should be on the new name in reforming and correcting the inmates. We should focus more on reformation of inmates.
โAs a result of our commitment to a proactive security agenda for the country, we are going to set up an early warning-alarm system in all the geopolitical zones, in other to nib in the bud any security breach before it happensโ.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Barr. Georgina Ekeoma Ehuriah, said, given the achievements recorded as the Governor in the State of Osun, she has no doubt that the Minister would make remarkable impacts in the Ministry in order to curb insecurity in Nigeria.
