The Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu has charged Nigerians in the South-South to embrace the whistle-blowing policy as part of efforts to boost the anti-corruption war.

He made the appeal on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State through the Head of Public Affairs, EFCC Port Harcourt Zonal Office, Dele Oyewale while speaking on Wave 91.7 FM during a public awareness programme on whistle blowing.

“Whistle-blowing is working, and significant recoveries have been made so far by the EFCC across the country through the policy,” he said, adding that the Anti-graft agency was positive that such a feat can be achieved in the South-South.

He further stressed the need for the public to own the corruption fight, as he said it was essential for the development of the Nigerian economy.

According to him, “We all want a nation of high per capital income; robust economy; zero hunger and functional infrastructures. This is a great aspiration but such a prospect can only materialize if we join hands together to fight corrupt practices. The whistle blowing window is a good opportunity to achieve this and we must explore it.”

He also assured whistle-blowers of their safety, noting that the Whistle Blowers Protection Act, 2017 has taken care of their needs.

He said: “The Act provides that a person who makes a disclosure shall not be subjected to victimisation by his or her employers or by fellow employees. Additionally, a person who makes a disclosure has the right to take legal action if he or she is victimised, dismissed, suspended, declared redundant, transferred against his or her will, harassed or intimidated in any manner.”
