Five migrants steal N226m from UAE bureau de change within two days of visit

A five-man armed robbery gang have been arrested by Sharjah Police in the United Arab Emirate after they robbed a Bureau De Change, of cash of different currency worth Dh2.3 million (N226,182,000), just two days after two of them arrived on a visiting visa.


According to Sharjah police website, the robbers had broken into the exchange; threatened staff, took the cash and fled the scene.

However, police nabbed two members of the gang members, who were later confessed to their involvement in the crime.

Two other members were busted in Ras Al Khaimah Emirate; the remaining member was arrested in Sharjah.

The suspects, who are all Africans confessed to the crime, and were accordingly detained and referred to the public prosecution.

The police said that three of the ring members were legal residents while two came to UAE on visit visa on March 18.

Major-General Saif Al Zeri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of the Sharjah Police, said the whole amount stolen has been recovered.

“The police team reached the site within seven minutes after the robbery was reported. The injured staff members were rushed to the hospital, where they were discharged the next day,” the officer said.
