The Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said it registered about 1,500 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) after Monday’s flood in Jibia Local Government Area.
The spokesman, Umar Muhammad, who spoke to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday, said most of the victims were women and children.
The government and the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) had donated relief materials to the victims to ease their hardship.
Muhammad added the IDPs were in good health, and medical personnel had been deployed in the camp to provide health care services.
More than 50 persons died, 20 still missing, with about 1,000 becoming homeless.
Governor Aminu Masari described the incident as “purely a natural disaster”.
He said: “The water from the river moved in a reversed order, coming back to the town through the drainage and caused the flooding.
“The water level is above 10 feet high, it is purely a natural disaster as the state government had built drainages emptying into Jibia River,” he said.
Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo visited the state on Tuesday and commiserated with the state and victims.
He pledged that the Federal Government would join hands with the state to compensate victims and help in rebuilding collapsed houses.
