The Acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Imohimi Edgal, said on Thursday that more than 200 kidnappers’ camps have been destroyed in various parts of the state.

Edgal, who stated this at a one-day workshop for stakeholders on the safety of students and staff of Model Colleges and upgraded secondary schools in the state, said the state police command has also concluded arrangement to deploy armed officers to some model colleges, especially schools located in riverine areas so as to forestall any incident of kidnapping.

The police commissioner, who was represented at the workshop by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department, Mr. Bolaji Salami, said kidnapping was not peculiar to Lagos State or Nigeria.

He said kidnapping in Lagos was mainly for ransom collection because the kidnappers were formerly armed robbers and pipeline vandals who were frustrated by fierce battle that the police had engaged them.

Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Adebule, who also spoke at the workshop, said the state’s special taskforce has been directed to embark on demolition exercise of all illegal shanties located around all public schools in the state.
