The daughter and granddaughter of a popular civil rights leader have been caught abusing animals and stealing, according to police in Maryland.
La Plata police said that they have arrested 51-year-old Malikah Shabazz and her daughter, 19-year-old Bettih Shabazz, after they were caught driving a stolen truck with seven abused dogs inside.
Malikah and Bettih are the daughter and granddaughter of Malcolm X. The mother and her daughter have been charged with 7 counts of animal cruelty and one count of vehicle theft.
They were booked into jail, and bail has been set at $2,000 each.
According to the criminal complaint, the Vermont state police notified the La Plata police that Malikah and Bettih were driving with a stolen U-Haul truck.
Officers spotted the stolen truck in a Walmart parking lot on Wednesday night. When police opened the back of the truck, they found 7 injured pit bulls that were held in crates.
Investigators said that the dogs were subject to inhumane conditions.
