British Prime Minister Theresa May could attend the Geneva international conference on Cyprus in early January, representing the UK as one of the island’s three guarantor powers, the Cyprus Mail understands.
It is understood that there is a possibility of the British PM attending but that would depend on the level of other participants.
On Thursday, a spokesman said Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan would be attending the conference.
Speaking to reporters, Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said the Turkish leader will represent Turkey at the January 12 conference in Geneva, where the parties aim to craft a comprehensive peace accord.
President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci will be meeting in Geneva for more talks on January 9, and on January 11 they will present maps with the territorial criteria.
On January 12, a conference on Cyprus will be convened with the added participation of the three guarantor powers — Greece, Turkey, and the UK — while other relevant parties shall be invited as needed, according to the United Nations.
The EU is also expected to be present but it was not yet clear whether it would be under an observer or representative status.
Greek Cypriot parties have also demanded participation of the UN Security Council and efforts were under to get members to take part.
