A grandmother lost her life when she was struck by a car that was driven by her young granddaughter.
The 81-year-old woman of California, was standing near a storage shed when she was struck by the car.
Police who came to investigate the incident, learned that the womanโs 14-year-old granddaughter was behind the wheel at the time of the accident.
The girl was getting driving lessons from her father, when police said that she accidentally pressed on the gas pedal instead of the brake and fatally struck her 81-year-old grandmother.
The victim, who was identified by the medical examinerโs office as Antonia Ramirez De Mendez of San Jose, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday afternoon.
According to police, the incident took place at Chateau La Salle trailer park on Monterey Road at around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
De Mendez was taken to a hospital with what doctors said were non-life threatening injuries. However, things took a turn for the worse and the grandmother was pronounced dead about 24 hours after the accident.
Under California state law, a person must be at least 15 and a half years old in order to obtain a learner’s permit. Police are still conducting their investigation. So far, no arrests have been made.
