A man was arrested on a charge of causing disturbance to an assembly lawfully engaged in the performance of religious worship after unplugging a loudspeaker of a temple during prayers because he wanted to sleep, according to police in Myanmar.

Mandalay police said that they have arrested 30-year-old Klaas Haytema of the Netherlands, after disrupting the prayer service at a Buddhist temple because he wanted to sleep in his hotel room.

On Thursday, Haytema has been sentenced to serve three months in prison after being convicted of causing a disturbance to an assembly lawfully engaged in the performance of religious worship.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of $79. Haytema apologized to the members of the Buddhist temple, saying that he was unaware that he was disrupting the prayers.

He claimed that all he wanted is to have several hours of undisturbed sleep. When he went outside the hotel, he saw a group of children playing with the loudspeaker.

He unplugged it because he thought that the children were playing with the speaker and disturbing his sleep. A large group of people gathered outside the hotel in order to harm Haytema.

The hotel staff called the police to rescue Haytema. He was then arrested. Haytema could have received up to two years in prison.
