The abrupt breakup between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt came as a major shock to the actress’ father.
Shortly after Jolie filed for divorce from her partner of 12 years, her dad, Jon Voight, said he never saw the separation coming.
“I’m really sad about this,” Voight told the Daily News. “I’m sending my love to Angie and the kids. “Obviously it must be something very serious.”
A lawyer for Jolie confirmed Tuesday that the actress was seeking the split “for the health of the family.”
Sources told TMZ, meanwhile, that Jolie had grown tired of Pitt’s use of marijuana and possibly alcohol and felt he had an “anger problem,” though Voight says he never saw Pitt displaying any anger issues.

“I’ll be in touch with Angie soon,” he said. “Of course I’m concerned for their well-being.”
Voight, 77, and his 41-year-old daughter previously had a notoriously rocky relationship, though the two are now on friendly terms.
Jolie initiated the split because she was displeased with how Pitt, 52, was raising their six children, according to TMZ. She reportedly believed his apparent anger and substance use made for an unfit environment for the kids.
Voight said he didn’t know anything about the specifics of the breakup, but had not heard anything about the possibility of infidelity.
“I know the kids are the priority and Angie will be most concerned about them,” he added.
Pitt and Jolie began their relationship in 2004 and wed in August 2014. They fell in love on the set of the 2005 action film “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
Jolie is now seeking physical custody of the kids, but requested the judge grant visitation rights to Pitt, according to TMZ. She listed their date of separation as Sept. 15 in the court filing.

“Usually I read about this stuff in the magazines and don’t believe it,” Voight told The News. “All of a sudden, it’s very real.”
