One pregnant woman from Hunan, China, says she was due to give birth on November 15th, 2015. It’s now August 18th, 2016, and she’s still pregnant.
According to local media reports, the woman, named Wang Shi from Tianping city, became pregnant last February. Once her due date passed, she started to get a little worried. Since then, she’s made a trip to the hospital for a check-up about every week or so. That has now added up to 30 trips and 10,000 yuan in hospital fees. Even in her 14th month of pregnancy, doctors told her that she could not get a cesarean section because the fetus still wasn’t mature enough.
People’s Daily claims that Wang’s pregnancy gives China yet another Guinness World Record. The longest documented pregnancy is that of an American woman named Beulah Hunter who gave birth in 1945 after being pregnant for 375 days. A normal pregnancy will be about 9 months or 280 days. At this point, Wang’s would be at least 517 days.
However, Guinness does not appear to have actually confirmed this “world record” and doctors at the hospital are very skeptical about Wang’s claims.
Changsha Evening News reporters asked around at the hospital, one doctor called the whole thing “impossible.” Another said that the hospital had asked Wang to undergo an ultrasound, but she had refused.
“I checked the results, she’s probably about 38 weeks pregnant, it all looks very normal,” the maternity department head insisted. “There is no evidence, medical or otherwise, that suggests she’s been pregnant for 17 months… we would just be taking her word for it.”
Wang has no records of exams from early in her pregancy. It wasn’t until near her due date in November 2015 that she even applied for a birth permit.
Meanwhile, Wang claims that she gained more than 30kg during her long pregnancy, going from 52.2kg to 78kg. Her baby is reported to weigh 3.8kg. Wang says that she will finally have a C-section in the 18th month. Before that happens, she should really prepare her husband for what that operation entails.
