The traditional burial rites of former Super Eagles captain and coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, are ongoing in Illah, his hometown in Delta State, family sources have revealed.

As a High Chief of the Illah kingdom, the traditional ruler of the town Obi Gbemudu, has ordered that the rites which will take seven days be observed in honour of the fallen national soccer icon. In the forefront of the rites will be the immediate younger sister of Keshi, Mary Addo, as those older than him are excused because of tradition.

The family also reiterates that while the Federal Government are yet to make any official statement on when they hope to honour Keshi, they were overjoyed by the huge turn-out at the burial last weekend in Benin City, Asaba and his final internment in Illah. “We remain eternally grateful to Nigerians and soccer greats too numerous to mention. The Edo and Delta State government deserve special mention, same for the Illah Traditional Council,” Addo declared.

The final traditional burial rites is expected to end this weekend with a thanksgiving service.
