At least one person died and four were injured after an allegedly accidental gas explosion ripped through a Belgian sports complex near the French border Thursday.
The cause of the blast was not immediately clear but an official at Belgium’s Crisis Center said the building, located in the small town of Chimay, most likely exploded “due to an accident, probably gas.”
The fatal explosion partially leveled the sports complex, leaving several people trapped in the rubble. Emergency responders remained on the scene into the early morning and police said they believed they had retrieved all the injured by sunrise.
Belgium has been on edge since dozens of people died in an ISIS-inspired attack at Brussels airport in March.
