A man of Australia, who was looking forward to celebrating his 99th birthday, never made it as he died in a fire.

World War II veteran Fred Smith died after a fire engulfed his home in Melbourne.

Fred Smith, who was just six weeks away from celebrating his 99th
birthday, died after a heater set fire to his home on Vaynor Street at
5:30 a.m.

Smith alerted authorities by activating his medical alert device.
However, when paramedics arrived, they found the single-floor brick
house on fire.

Victoria Police said that the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) rushed to
control the fire and found the body of the owner inside the house.

The MFB said that the fire started after a heater was too close to clothes and a couch.

Smith, who lived in the home for more than 50 years, was found dead in his favorite chair.
