It finally happened:
The most popular woman in the world has met the most popular boy band in the world. The Duchess of Cambridge attended London’s Royal Variety Performance with her husband Prince William and the couple mingled with One Directioners Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson before the boys were set to perform at the London Palladium. Bette Midler, Demi Lovato, Ed Sheeran, and Ellie Goulding, who was the wedding singer at the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s nuptials, all sang as well.
According to the Daily Mail, Styles said after meeting the Duchess: “I said congratulations on the bump” and he added that she “didn’t look bumpy.”
The rocker is right. Kate Middleton, who wore a floor length Diane von Furstenberg lace gown, which can be bought online for $1,315, is approximately 16 weeks pregnant and showed the tiniest hint of a baby bump. While the royals wore black tie, with the Duke donning a black tuxedo, the 1D members all opted for more causal looks, with Harry Styles standing out in a cheetah print jacket.
But while animal print definitely stands out in a sea of dark clothes, the fact that the 32-year-old expecting royal wore DVF is even more noteworthy. Prince George’s mom notoriously usually only wears U.K.-based designers, counting Jenny Packham, Temperley London, Alexander McQueen, L.K. Bennett, Reiss, and more. But this shocking changeup could come from her new stylist, Natasha Archer. And if this diversification of Middleton’s style means anything, it’s an indication of more great things to come.
