While Nicki Minaj is easily one of the most successful artists in the music industry, she’s often questioned about the type of example she’s setting for young Black women (read: Her Anaconda single’s artwork and occasionally raunchy lyrics.)
In an Interview with The FADER magazine, the rapper explains that her example has nothing to do with what she’s wearing.
โEvery time I do a business venture or something that isnโt the norm for a female rapper, I pat myself on the back,” said Minaj. “Itโs important that corporate America can see a young Black woman being able to sell things outside of music.”
With an estimated net worth of $45 million, Minaj is proving her selling power. The 31-year-old has done campaigns for K-Mark, and MAC Cosmetics. Her various perfumes have sold so well that she’s brokered a deal to launch her newest fragrance exclusively with the Home Shopping Network (HSN), something she stressed is a big deal for a female rapper to pull off.
What do you think about Minaj’s business moves? Are they enough to make her a good role model for young Black women?
