While Nicki Minaj is easily one of the most successful artists in the music industry, she’s often questioned about the type of example she’s setting for young Black women (read: Her Anaconda single’s artwork and occasionally raunchy lyrics.)

In an Interview with The FADER magazine, the rapper explains that her example has nothing to do with what she’s wearing.

โ€œEvery time I do a business venture or something that isnโ€™t the norm for a female rapper, I pat myself on the back,” said Minaj. “Itโ€™s important that corporate America can see a young Black woman being able to sell things outside of music.”

With an estimated net worth of $45 million, Minaj is proving her selling power. The 31-year-old has done campaigns for K-Mark, and MAC Cosmetics. Her various perfumes have sold so well that she’s brokered a deal to launch her newest fragrance exclusively with the Home Shopping Network (HSN), something she stressed is a big deal for a female rapper to pull off.

What do you think about Minaj’s business moves? Are they enough to make her a good role model for young Black women?
