Typhoon Nida reached Hong Kong on Monday night and is currently heading inland through Guangdong. Many cities, including Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Huizhou, have excused everyone from work or school.
Nida has brought heavy rains and winds to Hong Kong, causing most flights to be canceled and schools closed, reports SCMP. As it left Hong Kong for Guangdong it was downgraded from a typhoon to a severe tropical storm.
In the mainland, Guangdong has announced that the province has entered the highest level of emergency response. In many cities, all workers were excused from work and all classes and flights were cancelled. The images below show the Shenzhen airport.
Additionally, before the typhoon landed, the government suggested that residents “prepare 3 days of food” — leading to empty shelves in supermarkets across the province
