A woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after being bit by an alligator while trying to retrieve an empty soda can from the water, according to police in Florida.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Department said that 49-year-old Kimberly Anne Sexton, is being treated at the Broward Health North medical center, after the alligator tried to rip her hand off at the Willard’s Fish Camp.

According to witnesses at the scene, the woman dropped an empty can of Mountain Dew and it rolled into the water.

Sexton quickly tried to scoop out the can from the water, but the alligator attacked her. Two people immediately jumped into action to save Sexton.

They grabbed her legs to stop the alligator from pulling her into the water. They managed to free her hand. The crocodile remained in the area and was captured by an authorized alligator hunter.

Sextonโ€™s hand was almost amputated. Doctors managed to stabilize her after severe bleeding and loss of consciousness.
