A woman was arrested on a charge of outraging public decency after allegedly urinating on a war memorial in front of many people, according to police in the United Kingdom.

Essex police said that they have arrested 42-year-old Kelly Martin, after being accused of urinating on the Battle of the Somme memorial on the eve of the 100th anniversary.

Martin has been charged with outraging public decency, common assault and using threatening or abusive language.

The Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme Offensive, was a battle during the First World War fought by the armies of the British and French empires against the German Empire.

More than 100,000 people died as a result of the battle.

According to the police investigation, Martin pulled down her pants and relieved herself on the memorial the day before the 100th anniversary while out on bail for urinating on the same memorial several months ago.

On both occasions, she was seen by families and members of the public. People were shocked and repulsed by what they saw.

When police and paramedics tried to take her away from the scene, she threw a glass bottle at one of the paramedics who tried to assist her. In court, Martin claimed that she suffers from mental illness.

After a short trial, she was convicted on all counts. She will be sentenced next week.
