Matt Roberts, who played guitar for the post-grunge rock band 3 Doors Down, was found dead in a Wisconsin hotel room early Saturday morning, his father, Darrell Roberts, told TMZ. The musician was 38.

The cause of death was believed to be an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

Darrell Roberts told TMZ that his son was scheduled to perform at a charity event outside Wisconsin, and rehearsal went late into the night. The two Roberts men retreated to their adjoining hotel rooms, when detectives woke Darrell Roberts at 9 a.m.

Although the father told TMZ that prescription pills were involved, he believed the possible overdose was accidental.

Roberts was an original member of 3 Doors Down when it formed in 1996. After almost two decades and nearly 20 million albums sold, Roberts and the multi-platinum band parted ways in 2012 due to his health concerns regarding blood circulation.

The band is best known for early 2000s hits like “Kryptonite” and “Here Without You.”

The 3 Doors Down official website at the time said: “Over the past few years, Roberts has unfortunately, dealt with health and circulation problems and those issues have only been exacerbated by performing nearly 300 dates each year with the band.”

Upon parting ways, Roberts said in a statement, “3 Doors Down will always have a special place in my heart and it saddens me to take this time off. But my health has to be my first priority.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Matt Roberts’ family and friends.
