A discus thrower who won a silver medal in the Rio 2016 Games is selling it to raise money for a three-year-old with cancer.

Polish athlete Piotr Malachowski is donating the silver medal he won after his impressive 67.77m throw in Brazil.

He hopes the donation will help Olek Szymanski, who has been diagnosed with retinoblastoma (a type of eye cancer) to fly to the US for treatment.

Malachowski said: ‘My silver medal is worth a lot more than a week ago. It is worth the health of little Olek.’

He added: ‘We were able to show that together we can do wonders. It is our great shared success.’

Pleaing with his followers on Facebook, Malachowski said: ‘In Rio I fought for the gold. Today I appeal to everyone ― let’s fight together about something that is even more precious: the health of this fantastic boy.

‘If you help me, my silver can be more precious than gold.’
