People in Indonesia, demanded stricter punishment for sex offenders and their pleas were heard by government officials.
President Joko Widodo initially issued the order after sex crimes against children became rampant in the country.
Now, the parliament has approved the bill that allows chemical castration and death penalty against adults who commit sex crimes against children.
Minister Yohanna Yambise of Women and Children Empowerment, said that she hopes the new law will “create a safer environment for children.”
Through the new law, judges are allowed to hand down a sentence to castrate a person who is found guilty of sexual offenses against children.
The castration would be done by injecting the chemical in the sex offender to strongly reduce the libido.
The law also allows authorities to order microchips to be implanted in the bodies of the convicted sex offenders in order to monitor their movements after they get out of prison.
In a case involving severe cases of sex crimes against children, judges can now sentence them to the death penalty.
Perpetrators under the age of 18 years old will not be subjected to the harsh punishment. Instead, they will be required to undergo rehabilitation in a facility that is approved by authorities.
