The police have arrested five male suspects in Umuahia, Abia State, in connection with the attack on a Deputy Superintendent of Police who was on election duties at a collation centre.

This came as a gang attacked a Deputy Commissioner of Police in Brass, Bayelsa State,  on Sunday.

However, the acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the arrest, investigation and prosecution of those behind the developments.

In a statement on Monday by Force spokesman, Frank Mba,  the IG, who condemned the incidents, said, โ€œsuch brazen acts of impunity will not be condonedโ€.

He said, โ€œThese attacks have once again highlighted the risks and hazards inherent in policing in our country, and the need for stakeholders and government at all levels to continue to support the police  in the discharge of their responsibilities.โ€

However, Adamu said the DCP and DSP  were in good health.

The Bayelsa Police Command on Monday said the DCP, whose name it did not disclose,  was manhandled by thugs.

Spokesman for the police in the state, Asinim Butswat, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Yenagoa that the IG  was not happy with the development.

He said,    โ€œThe acting IG has sent a delegation led by the Deputy Inspector-General Elections, South-South,  Fredrick Lakanu, for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.โ€

According to Butswat, the DIG, while addressing senior officers, condemned the attack.

The spokesman added that Lakanu also ordered the state  Commissioner of Police to deploy more officers in all flashpoints in the state to forestall any break down of law and order.
