The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has said that the anti-graft agency is being guided by the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution in all its operations.
The EFCC boss made this known in Ibadan on Wednesday 27th March 2019, while responding to questions during a phone-in programme at the Space FM, a radio station based in the ancient city.
Magu, who was represented by Head of the EFCC’s Ibadan zonal office, DCDS Friday Ebelo, noted that the Commission tries its best to ensure that no right of any citizen is trampled upon in the course of investigation to allegations of fraud brought against them.
“Our investigators are specially trained and they are aware of the consequences of operating outside the ambit of the law.
“To this end, they ensure that all rights of suspects are respected including allowing them to wait till they have their lawyers present before making their statement, if they so wish,” he said.
He also cautioned the public against falling into the trap of impersonators, who use his name and identities of the Commission to dupe unsuspecting members of the public.
According to him, the Commission has recorded some of such cases which led to the prosecution of the culprits and subsequent conviction.
Magu encouraged Nigerians to join hands with EFCC in the quest to stamp out corruption in the country.
He urged them to forward to the Commission anytime they get hold of information on anyone engaging in fraudulent activities.
“We can’t do this job (fight against corruption) alone. We need the cooperation of all Nigerians to make this nation work for all of us,” he noted.
