Presidency attacks senator for asking Buhari to quit

The Presidency on Wednesday attacked Senate Minority Leader Enyinnaya Abaribe for asking President Muhammadu Buhari to resign over rising insecurity in the country.

It described Abaribe as an armchair critic who should be in jail for failing to produce Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), for whom he stood surety.

In a series of tweets last night, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu, said the call did not represent the opinion of Nigerians, adding that if anyone should resign, it should be Abaribe.

He said Abaribeโ€™s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) โ€œrapedโ€ the nation, with President Buhari working hard to fix things.

Abaribe caused a stir in the Senate during the debate on the worsening insecurity in the country, when he recalled that President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) told Nigerians during their campaign to stone them if they failed to perform.

The Minority Leader said: โ€œWhen I was coming this morning, I saw a newspaper headline which read: โ€˜Commander-in-Chief expresses shock at the level of violent crimesโ€™ in the country.

โ€œIn other words, Mr President was expressing surprise but in accordance to our rules in Order 53 (13), I will not go into that but I can only say in Pidgin English โ€˜this surprise, surprise me.โ€™โ€

Turning to Senate President Ahmad Lawan, Abaribe added: โ€œMr President, Nigerians did not elect the Inspector-General of Police. We did not elect the Chief of Staff, and we did not elect the joint chiefs or the National Security Adviser.

โ€œWe elected the government of APC in 2015 and re-elected them in 2019. The reason we re-elected them was that they continued to tell us that they had the key to security.

โ€œWhen you want to deal with a matter, you go to the head, so we will go to the government and ask this government to resign because they can no longer do anything.

โ€œIt is now  time to pick stones to stone them in view of their obvious failure.โ€

At this point, Lawan cut him short. He called on Abaribe and all those who desired to contribute to the debate to be apolitical.

Ahmad said bandits and Boko Haram insurgents do not operate on partisan grounds when they kill citizens.

But when Abaribe regained the floor, he said: โ€œIn conclusion, I want to say that Nigerians voted a government into power and that government even said โ€˜if we donโ€™t perform, stone usโ€™ we are going with the stones to stone them nowโ€ฆโ€

Again Lawan stopped him and said he (Abaribe) had exhausted the allotted time to make his contribution.

Lawan added: โ€œThe situation in this country is such a serious one that our debate should be towards ensuring that we are able to get solutions.โ€

In his tweets last night, Shehu added that Abaribe was known for making โ€œstrayโ€ comments.

โ€œPresident Buhari, to resign on what basis? Just because some characters think that President Buhari should resign, then they expect him to quit.

โ€œThat call does not represent the opinion of the country. This is the opinion of an armchair critic known for making stray comments.

โ€œIf a leader like President Buhari needs to resign, there are millions of other Nigerians who need to resign, including Senator Abaribe who unlocked the door to enable the escape of traitorous and treasonable suspects.

โ€œHe signed the bond for the court to release Nnamdi Kanu (leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) who is on the run) on bail, from which moment the suspect disappeared into the thin air.

โ€œSenator Abaribe has failed repeated deadlines to return Kanu to the court for trial, yet he has the effrontery with which to accuse someone of failing to the bidding of the law.

โ€œThis is a man who should have replaced the suspects he failed to produce in the correctional facility.

โ€œAbaribeโ€™s party raped the nation and left it collapsing in 2015 and President Buhari is fixing things up all the years he is in office.

โ€œPresident Buhari is working hard to keep Nigeria and Nigerians out of the harm terrorists have unleashed in the entire Sahel and Sub-Saharan Africa with the support of Nigerians and our foreign friends. He is going to finish off these terrorists. He alone can do it.โ€

Senator Abudullahi Adamu from Nasarawa also took exception to Abaribeโ€™s call on President Buhari to resign.

He insisted that the Senate President ought to have ruled that Abaribe should withdraw his submissions.

The Senator said: โ€œThere is no doubting the fact that we do face security challenges in this country.

โ€œMr President, if we do not approach this debate with the level of sensibility that it demands, we shall be doing more harm than good to this issue of national security.

โ€œThe opening salvo by the Minority Leader where he landed and crash-landed by saying he is going with stones โ€“ stone in the spirit in which he made that contribution is a weapon. We cannot sit here as elder statesmen and be adding salt to injury.

โ€œIt is not within our duty to do so. I would have wished the Senate President did not to only tell the minority leader that the time allotted for the discussion was up but should have told him to withdraw the statement.โ€
