COVID-19: Governor Fayemi in self-isolation

Following his close contact with some top presidential aides and Bauchi Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, who has tested positive for coronavirus, the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has gone into self-isolation.

Fayemi, who made this known on his official twitter handle, said he has taken the coronavirus (COVID-19) test following his previous meeting with two people who tested positive for the virus.

He had met Senator Mohammed at the Nigeria Governors Forum and National Economic Council meetings.

The Governor said though he showed no symptoms of the virus, he took the necessary precaution to self-isolate to protect people that may otherwise come in contact with him.

Though the result of the test was not stated in his tweet, he encouraged his fellow colleagues to follow in his footsteps by taking the test.

Fayemi, however, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode urged Ekiti citizens not to panic over the development, saying he took the precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

The governor said the action became imperative having been in contact with those suspected to be having index cases of covid-19.

Fayemi, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, said: โ€œNo cause for alarm, I just took this step as a normal precautionary measuresโ€.

He added : โ€œWith the circumstance will find ourselves today, every citizen must engage in personal hygiene and take actions that can help us overcome this challenge and that exactly I have done.

โ€œI had gone in contact with those having suspected cases and I felt I have to do this to help the situation.โ€

Fayemi urged the citizens to abide by the directive on social distancing and hand washing to safeguard the state from the widespreading disease.

Also, Ekiti state chapter of the All Progressives Congress has shut down its secretariat for 14 days to prevent the spread of Coronavirus in the state.

A statement by the partyโ€™s State Publicity Secretary, Hon Ade Ajayi, on Wednesday, said the closure became inevitable to help Fayemi find a lasting solution to the spread of the scourge

The party appealed to Ekiti residents to comply with the directive by Fayemi not to hold any gathering more than 20 persons in every home, church, mosque and other public institutions.
