The Senior Special Assistant to the Deputy President of the Senate on Youth and Sports, Azania Omo-Agege has called on the Delta State Government to give urgent attention to the Government Remand Home, Sapele.

Omo-Agege who stated this during a visit to the facility, lamented that the remand home lacked relevant educational and vocational trainings to equip the inmates to live a meaningful life when they return to the larger society.

According to him, inmates in the facility are treated like condemned criminals.

The Senior Special Assistant also used the opportunity of the visit to donate items like face masks, sanitizers, slippers among others to the inmates.

He said: “The Government Remand Home, Sapele is a breeding ground for notorious criminals. It is not only appalling, but worrisome. No human being, no matter the quantum of his offence deserves to live in such an environment.

“The facility is inhabitable, ill-equipped and the inmates ill-fed. They eat twice a day without meat. They are denied humane treatment. They are treated like condemned criminals.

“More worrisome is the fact that the facility lacks relevant educational and vocational trainings to equip the inmates to live a sustainable life when they return to the larger society.

“The attendant result of the poor, difficult and deprived environment is such that many of the young offenders are transformed to hardened criminals, which poses a greater burden, threat and danger for the future”.
