Four people were killed and 14 others wounded after gunfire erupted at a family gathering in Stockton, northern California, on Saturday evening, authorities confirmed.
The shooting occurred during a child’s birthday party near the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue shortly before 6:00 p.m. local time (0200 GMT). Stockton’s Vice Mayor Jason Lee said in a Facebook post that he was in contact with public safety officials and vowed to push for answers.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on X: “We can confirm at this time that approximately 14 individuals were struck by gunfire, and four victims have been confirmed deceased.” Officials described the investigation as “very active and ongoing,” noting that early indications suggest the attack may have been targeted.
