Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised the reported distribution of luxury vehicles for 2027 campaign mobilisation, describing the move as “profound insensitivity” and a betrayal of public trust.
In a statement released on Thursday, Obi condemned the allocation of Hilux trucks, Hummer buses, and other high-end vehicles at a time when Nigerians are grappling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity. He said the decision reflected a “serious moral failure” and a misplacement of priorities by those in leadership.
“While ordinary Nigerians are struggling with poverty and hopelessness, leaders continue to flaunt their wealth by driving brand-new Land Cruisers, Hiluxes, and Hummers, treating the suffering of the people as mere background for political theatrics,” Obi said.
He argued that governance should focus on urgent needs such as food security, healthcare, education, and community safety, rather than campaign publicity. Obi highlighted the plight of families unable to afford school fees, mothers dying in childbirth due to lack of medical supplies, and communities torn apart by insecurity.
“This is not governance. It reflects a profound insensitivity and an abuse of public trust disguised as a political strategy,” he said, adding that Nigeria must abandon “wastefulness, insensitivity, and misplaced priorities” in favour of leadership grounded in empathy, prudence, and accountability.
Despite the bleak situation, Obi reiterated his belief in the possibility of a “New Nigeria,” insisting that change is both necessary and achievable.
