The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) produced another exciting day of football across Morocco, with big victories, late drama and standout performances shaping the latest round of group‑stage matches.
Nigeria opened their AFCON 2025 campaign with a 2–1 win over Tanzania in Fez. Semi Ajayi gave the Super Eagles the lead in the 36th minute with a powerful header from an Alex Iwobi cross. Tanzania equalised shortly after halftime when Charles M’Mombwa finished confidently to make it 1–1. Nigeria responded almost immediately, and Ademola Lookman restored the lead in the 52nd minute with a brilliant strike. The result gives Nigeria a strong start in Group C as they aim to build on their 2024 AFCON final appearance.
In Rabat, hosts Morocco began their tournament with a convincing 2–0 victory over Comoros. Despite dominating the first half and winning an early penalty, Morocco were unable to break the deadlock before the interval. The breakthrough finally arrived after the restart when Brahim Díaz calmly finished following sustained pressure. Ayoub El Kaabi added a second goal to secure the win and send the home crowd into celebration. The performance highlighted Morocco’s attacking strength and reinforced their status as one of the tournament favourites.
DR Congo also claimed an important opening‑day victory, defeating Benin 1–0 in a tight match in Rabat. Both sides struggled to create clear chances throughout the game, but DR Congo found the decisive goal deep into stoppage time to take control of their group.
Today’s confirmed AFCON results were:
- Nigeria 2–1 Tanzania

- DR Congo 1–0 Benin
These results place Nigeria at the top of Group C, while Morocco’s strong start strengthens their position as contenders for the title. DR Congo’s late win gives them early momentum in their group, with several key fixtures still ahead.
