Nigeria’s media fraternity is mourning the death of veteran journalist and magazine publisher, Dan Agbese, whose passing has drawn heartfelt tributes from political leaders and colleagues alike.
Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar described Agbese as a towering figure in journalism whose contributions to national discourse and media development will be sorely missed.
In his tribute, Peter Obi hailed Agbese as “a consummate columnist, a remarkable journalist, and a passionate advocate for a better Nigeria.” He noted that Agbese dedicated his life to highlighting the country’s challenges while inspiring hope for progress and good governance. Obi also recalled Agbese’s support during the electioneering period, saying his commitment to truth, integrity, and mentorship of younger journalists left a lasting legacy.
Atiku Abubakar, in his condolence message, described Agbese’s death as “shocking,” emphasizing that his demise leaves “a crater in the field of media management in Nigeria.” Atiku remembered him as a trusted friend who offered professional media strategies at different times, adding that his wisdom and guidance enriched both journalism and public life.
Both leaders prayed for God to grant Agbese eternal rest and give his family, colleagues, and mentees the strength to bear the loss.
