Buratai Slams Wike Over Clash with Military Officer, Calls for Apology

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), has strongly condemned the recent altercation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a young military officer in Abuja. The confrontation, which reportedly stemmed from a land dispute involving a property linked to a former naval chief, was captured on video and widely circulated online.

Buratai described Wikeโ€™s behavior as โ€œreckless, provocative, and a threat to national security,โ€ asserting that the ministerโ€™s actions undermined the authority of the Armed Forces and disrespected the office of the Commander-in-Chief. He emphasized that uniformed personnel deserve respect and protection, especially when carrying out lawful duties.

In his statement, Buratai demanded an immediate apology from Wike to President Bola Tinubu, the Armed Forces, and the officer involved. He warned that such conduct from public officials could erode discipline and institutional integrity within Nigeriaโ€™s fragile democratic framework.

This incident has sparked renewed debate about civil-military relations and the need for clearer boundaries between political authority and military operations. It also highlights broader concerns about governance, accountability, and respect for constitutional order in Nigeria.
