Nigeria’s Super Eagles scraped past Lesotho 2-1 on Thursday, clinging to their 2026 World Cup qualification hopes with a performance that was more chaotic than convincing.
Coach Eric Chelle rolled out a star-studded lineup featuring Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen and Al-Kholood’s William Troost-Ekong, but the supposed firepower fizzled for much of the match. Moses Simon sparked early excitement in the 6th minute with a darting run, yet the Crocodiles’ defence held firm, exposing Nigeria’s lack of creativity and cohesion.
Despite dominating possession, the Eagles were plagued by sloppy passing and predictable build-up play. Lesotho’s back five easily neutralized Nigeria’s attack, forcing Osimhen to rely on individual brilliance. His 38th-minute effort was the closest Nigeria came to scoring in the first half—an isolated flash in an otherwise toothless offensive display.
The breakthrough came in the 53rd minute via a penalty, awarded after Motlomelo Mkwanazi handled a shot from Simon. Ekong converted coolly, but it was hardly a moment of tactical triumph. Nigeria’s second goal, courtesy of Akor Adamson in the 80th minute, came after Osimhen finally found space to deliver a decent pass.
Yet even with a two-goal cushion, the Eagles couldn’t close out the match cleanly. A lapse in concentration during a corner allowed Hlompho Kalake to punish the Nigerian defence, reminding fans that this team remains dangerously inconsistent.
If this performance is anything to go by, Nigeria’s road to North America will be paved with more questions than answers.
