Former Vice President Namadi Sambo was formally turbaned as the Sardaunan Zazzau on Saturday, October 11, in a ceremony presided over by His Royal Highness, the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli. The title, one of the most revered in Northern Nigeria, recognizes distinguished service and leadership within the Zazzau Emirate.
Among the many tributes that followed the investiture was a message from former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who described Sambo as “a dear elder brother and Leader,” and praised the honour as “well-deserved.”
Obi commended the Emirate’s decision, stating that the title reflects the Emir’s confidence in Sambo’s “wisdom, integrity, and lifelong commitment to the progress of our society.” He added that the recognition was unsurprising given Sambo’s “invaluable contributions to national development.”
“The investiture is a celebration of humility and dedication to the service of humanity,” Obi said, noting that the honour underscores Sambo’s deep-rooted devotion to both his community and the nation.
Obi also lauded Emir Bamalli for upholding the tradition of honouring individuals whose character and leadership embody the values of unity, patriotism, and service. “This act strengthens the spirit of unity, service, and integrity that we all strive to uphold,” he stated.
The Sardauna title carries historical significance and is traditionally conferred on individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership and commitment to public service. Sambo’s turbaning was attended by dignitaries, traditional leaders, and members of the public.
Obi concluded his message with a prayer that Sambo’s journey as Sardaunan Zazzau would be “a source of blessing to our nation.”
