Peter Obi Calls for Urgent Action on Nigeria’s Mental Health Crisis

by Joseph Anthony

As the world commemorates Mental Health Day this weekend, former presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a strong appeal for the Nigerian government to declare the country’s mental health situation a public health emergency.

In a statement titled Tackling Public Health Emergencies, Obi cited alarming data from the World Health Organization (WHO), which estimates that approximately 40 million Nigerians are currently living with mental health conditions. Despite the scale of the crisis, the country has fewer than 300 practicing psychiatrists, underscoring a severe shortage of mental health professionals.

“This clearly shows Nigeria’s growing disinterest and neglect of the health sector,” Obi said, warning that mental health challenges are now eclipsing physical health concerns. He attributed the rise in mental distress to widespread poverty, unemployment, and daily survival struggles, which he said have driven many—particularly youth—into hopelessness, criminality, and suicide.

Obi called for a comprehensive national response, including the recruitment of more mental health professionals and the establishment of well-equipped psychiatric hospitals across all geopolitical zones. He also emphasized the need to address underlying socioeconomic factors contributing to mental illness.

“We must also address the issues of poverty, unemployment and hunger that are contributing to this mental problem and build a nation that heals, uplifts, and gives every citizen a reason to live,” he stated.

Obi concluded by stressing that Nigeria’s progress should be measured not by the wealth of its leaders but by the well-being of its people. His remarks come amid growing calls from health experts and civil society organizations for increased investment in mental health infrastructure and services.
