Tributes have poured in following the death of Professor U. Joy Ogwu, a pioneering figure in Nigerian diplomacy and international affairs. Her passing marks the end of a distinguished career that broke multiple barriers and left a lasting legacy in global governance and foreign policy.

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed deep sorrow over her death, describing her as “a dear elder sister” and “an unassuming trailblazer.” In a statement, Obi highlighted her historic achievements, noting that she was the first woman to serve as Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), the first female Foreign Minister of Nigeria in 2006, and the first Nigerian woman to represent the country at the United Nations as Permanent Representative in 2008.

Prof. Ogwu also made history as the first Nigerian female to preside over the UN Security Council, holding the role in July 2010 and again in October 2011.

A respected academic and researcher, Prof. Ogwu authored several influential works on foreign policy, disarmament, and multilateral diplomacy. She was widely regarded as an expert on global security issues and a passionate advocate for women’s development and human rights.

Her death is being mourned across Nigeria, particularly in her home state of Delta, where she was seen as a source of pride and inspiration. “Her demise is a great loss to her family, those close to her, Delta State and Nigeria,” Obi said, offering prayers for strength and peace to those she left behind.

Prof. Ogwu’s contributions to Nigeria’s international standing and her role in shaping foreign policy continue to resonate, with many calling her a symbol of excellence, integrity, and service.

Details of memorial arrangements are expected to be announced by her family and affiliated institutions in the coming days.
